To Eletrobras, the practice of business citizenship occurs by means of its projects and social and environmental programs and in the preparation of its energy programs; that is, the commitment is changed into effective action.
These actions are guided by ethics and social and environmental responsibility, which have always been present to the values of the company. Its most important document - the Code of Ethics - functions as a tool for decision taking and processes management.
In addition, Eletrobras tries to act encouraging good practices with stakeholders. As an example, the disclosure of the principles present in its Ethics Code is an integral part of the adaptation of hired employees and is available on the intranet for reference of its workers. Printed versions are also sent to shareholders and suppliers.
In 2006, Eletrobras created the Sustainability Committee of Eletrobras System, with working groups focused on the three sustainability dimensions (triple bottom line): economic-financial, social and environmental.
This Committee develops a number of actions which enabled, among other achievements:
- Execution of the Global Compact;
- Inclusion of Eletrobras in the ISE/Bovespa in the 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011 portfolios;
- Preparation of the first Eletrobras System’s Socio-environmental Report (regarding the year 2007);
- Qualification of workers in the methodology GRI (Global Reporting Initiative), internationally acknowledged as the guidance to the preparation of sustainability reports.
